Dutch shipping company Samskip has launched a new shortsea container service calling at the Port of Blyth to improve multimodal connections between the UK and major European trade hubs.
The service is part of Samskip’s broader strategy to provide shippers with a reliable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional transport methods.
The new service features direct weekly sailings from Blyth to Rotterdam, one of Europe’s foremost ports, offering a fast and efficient means for shippers in the region to access continental markets.
Samskip’s Manager of Sales and Operations, Scott Montgomery, stated:
“Expanding to Blyth supports our mission to be closer to our customers and provide agile, multimodal solutions tailored to their evolving needs. This new service opens up exciting opportunities for regional shippers seeking dependable and environmentally conscious logistics”.
The move comes at a key time when sustainability is becoming a central focus for the shipping industry. With growing environmental concerns and tightening emissions regulations, shortsea shipping offers a more sustainable alternative to long-haul trucking routes.
The new service will also integrate with existing road and rail networks, providing end-to-end transportation for inland distribution.
The Port of Blyth was chosen for its strategic location and modern infrastructure. Its proximity to vital industrial zones and entry points makes it an ideal node in the logistics network.
Commercial Director at the Port of Blyth, Alasdair Kerr, stated:
“Together with our logistics arm, Transped, we’re providing a full suite of value-added services including cross-docking, storage, and export packing. This ensures a seamless and efficient supply chain for our customers”.
By launching the new container service at Blyth, Samskip is set to play an important role in the future of European multimodal transport.
